Enhanced small-scale Faraday rotation in the Galactic spiral arms

چکیده
We present an analysis of the rotation measures (RMs) of polarized extragalactic point sources in the Southern Galactic Plane Survey. This work demonstrates that the statistics of fluctuations in RM differ for the spiral arms and the interarm regions. Structure functions of RM are flat in the spiral arms, while they increase in the interarms. This indicates that there are no correlated RM fluctuations in the magneto-ionized interstellar medium in the spiral arms on scales larger than ∼ 0.5, corresponding to ∼ 17 pc in the nearest spiral arm probed. The non-zero slopes in interarm regions imply a much larger scale of RM fluctuations. We conclude that fluctuations in the magneto-ionic medium in the Milky Way spiral arms are not dominated by the mainly supernova-driven turbulent cascade in the global ISM but are probably due to a different source, most likely H ii regions. Characteristics of the Galactic magneto-ionized ISM from Faraday rotation
Faraday rotation measurements of polarized extragalactic sources probe the Galactic magnetized, ionized interstellar medium. Rotation measures of these sources behind the inner Galactic plane are used to explore characteristics of the structure in the spiral arms and in interarm regions. Structure in the spiral arms has a characteristic outer scale of a few parsecs only, whereas interarm region...
متن کاملGalactic and Extragalactic Magnetic Fields
The strength of the total magnetic field in our Milky Way from radio Zeeman and synchrotron measurements is about 6 μG near the Sun and several mG in dense clouds, pulsar wind nebulae, and filaments near the Galactic Center. Diffuse polarized radio emission and Faraday rotation of the polarized emission from pulsars and background sources show many small-scale magnetic features, but the overall...
متن کاملPulsar Rotation Measures and the Large-scale Structure of Galactic Magnetic Field
The large-scale magnetic field of our Galaxy can be probed in three dimensions using Faraday rotation of pulsar signals. We report on the determination of 223 rotation measures from polarization observations of relatively distant southern pulsars made using the Parkes radio telescope. Combined with previously published observations these data give clear evidence for large-scale counterclockwise...
متن کاملRadio Polarimetry in the Southern Galactic Plane Survey
We present radio polarimetric observations of a region spanning 325.5◦ < l < 332.5, −0.5◦ < b < 3.5, used as a test region for the Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS) [1]. The SGPS is a radio survey in the Southern Galactic plane in HI and polarized continuum at 9 frequencies around 1.4 GHz, performed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Parkes 64m dish [2]. Ubiquitous st...
متن کاملMeasuring interstellar magnetic fields by radio synchrotron emission
Radio synchrotron emission, its polarization and its Faraday rotation are powerful tools to study the strength and structure of interstellar magnetic fields. The total intensity traces the strength and distribution of total magnetic fields. Total fields in gas-rich spiral arms and bars of nearby galaxies have strengths of 20–30 μGauss, due to the amplification of turbulent fields, and are dynam...
